This shows two rows of four app icons, with an arrow to move you rightwards, to see more -- 15 or 16 altogether. To the right of this active window are two sorted lists of ten apps each:"top paid apps" and "top free apps."Scroll down further, and you come to the "New apps" section: a four-icon block that scrolls to the right, in increments of four, showing a total of 16 new apps. The icons introduce an immediate level of frustration. They show only the name, and whatever icon image that the developer has chosen. In some cases, for example, the official Twitter app, you know what you're getting -- "this is the app for Twitter."But otherwise, the only indication you have of what the app is about, is the broadest of hints in whichever "genre" it's been placed. Microsoft has made much of the fact that you can 'glance and go' at Windows Phone, because the OS gives you so much live, uptodate information. Not so when it comes to the Marketplace: there's no 'mouse-over' popup what would give, for example, a quick summary of the app, information you could use to decide whether you wanted more details, or you didn't want to spend anymore time with it since it was not what you were looking for.If you click on the "Business" category, a tiny black flag appears next to this label, a useful reminder of where you are. The vertical scrolling windows fills with what seems to be a maximum of 28 app icons. You click on an arrow to move right, if there are more than 28 in the category. But you have no idea how many apps are in a given category. So you never know how many you have to sort through. In addition, the apps are, again, arranged apparently randomly: an alphabetical listing would give you a rough idea of where a known app would be in the grouping -- an app starting with "W" would be near the end, for example. Under each icon is the app name, five stars for the user rating (black stars show the rating), and either "FREE" or the price of the app. That's all: to find out any more information you have to click the app. When you do, you see the app icon at left; just to the right of it, is the name, it's genre or category, the version number, the release date; and a clickable bar, with "Free" or the price. Clicking here brings up a "confirmation" window to confirm your free download or complete the purchase of the app.To the right is a brief description of the app, and what general information the apps makes use: for example, "data connection", "media library", "owner identity."At left, the customer "star" rating is repeated, with a link "view reviews," which shifts you to the list of reviews. Each shows the number of stars awarded by the reviewer, the reviewer's username, and the date and time of the post.Clicking on "view description" shifts you back to the app's main page.Along the bottom of the page, is a series of screenshots, sometimes only one, sometimes half a dozen or more. Clicking on one, will bring it up in a pop-up, which appears to be the size of an actual Windows Phone screen (but I'm not sure of that). In my flat panel resolution, the popup is not very clear, especially the text (I don't know what this feature will look or behave as on a real Windows Phone.) The relative small size, on a full-size desktop display, is frustrating: I couldn't see clearly the screenshot's details.
